Pattern Three
Spiritual Bypassing
“I used faith to transcend the pain — not to process it.”
Faith communities — particularly those with a strong emphasis on victory, breakthrough, and spiritual authority — can inadvertently create a culture where emotional pain is spiritualised rather than processed. You pray over what needs to be grieved. You declare what needs to be examined. You fast over what needs to be felt.
The pain does not disappear. It goes underground — where it continues to shape decisions, relationships, and leadership from below the surface. Spiritual language becomes the sophisticated disguise for unprocessed wounds. And the person is genuinely devout — and genuinely stuck.
How it shows up
“I have strong faith and I still cannot break this pattern. I feel like I should be further along by now.”
